I was recently given the opportunity to receive, read, and review a copy of Kaleidoscope, by Patsy Clairmont. The book’s subtitle is “Seeing God’s Wit and Wisdom in a Whole New Light,” and I’ve always been intrigued by the book of Proverbs, so I jumped at the chance.
I’m a big fan of Patsy Clairmont, too. She’s one of the Women of Faith speakers, and when I went to one of their conferences a couple of years ago she was – far and away – my favorite. She has a terrific sense of humor, which I always appreciate, and she, too, has suffered greatly with anxiety, depression, and agoraphobia, so I relate to her quite well.
I have to confess, though, that I was somewhat disappointed in this book. I suspect the problem is more with me than with the book. I don’t think I quite knew what the book was going to be, so I had conjured up my own ideas and, as a result, was disappointed.
Kaleidoscope, I think, would be great for a small group study. Each chapter focuses on one specific verse from Proverbs, and has a quick personal application of it. At the close of each chapter is a series of questions focusing your thoughts on the verse and others like it, and a series of verses from throughout Scripture that relate to the topic.
While not quite what I had expected, I did enjoy the book. It was an easy read, to me, and was a good one to have by my bed at night. If you’re interested, Kaleidoscope is available from Thomas Nelson Publishers and any book retailer.
