I just finished reading Date Night in a Minivan, by Lorilee Craker, and I have to admit – again – that it wasn’t what I had hoped for or expected.
Perhaps I should find out more about my books before I buy them. I might save myself from disappointment if I knew better what to expect going in.
I digress.
This book was good. It was. I won’t deny that, and I would even go so far as to recommend it for new moms. Because of my fantastic church community, though, I didn’t feel like I read anything in this book that I hadn’t heard before. My church is very intentionally focused on marriages and making the marriage relationship all that God wants it to be, so through our small groups and weekend retreats, I’ve heard a lot of wisdom on how to keep a marriage strong in spite of all of the obstacles life throws at it. This book, really, was a compilation of a lot of those ideas all lumped into one easy-to-read handbook.
The author is pretty funny, and through real-life testimonies from real-life moms and dads who have been there, she tackles common issues in the lives of married couples with kids. She takes a very real look at how inevitable situations become problems, and gives practical advice on how to overcome it and make your marriage stronger through it.
All in all, good stuff for anyone whose relationship with their husband is, well, not what it was before the little ones arrived. I recommend it (but not if you go to my church). =)
