“When We Were Little” Wednesday

WWWLWednesday_Page_0

When we were little, I remember going to a playground across the street from my elementary school to play with my sister. The playground was at a community center, but strangely enough sometimes we would go there for our P.E class or for recess. (That seems really strange to me now, since it was probably actually considered to be off school property. I wonder why they were allowed to take us there?) It was a great playground; my favorite part was a tire swing that, on one fateful day, caused a reappearance of my school lunch. That did little to change my feelings for the swing.

I don’t know how often my mom took my sister and me there to play, but I know she did. I can remember running around over there with her, which never would have happened during school hours since we were 2 grades apart. We would run and play and get terribly dirty….because, well, that’s what you do on playgrounds.

Yesterday I had one of those mommy moments that made me stop for a second and just soak in the strangeness of the situation. My sister Ashley and I took the babies – Ashley Marie and Leah – for a play date at the same playground we used to play on. When we got there, Ashley and I commented on how it’s a different playground than it was when we played there – different equipment and all – but how weird it was to be bringing our daughters there to play together in the same way that we had. I can just envision the two of them running and playing and getting terribly dirty….because, well, that’s what you do on playgrounds, regardless of your age or your generation.

How sweet! And those adorable babies... my fingers are inclined to pinch some chubby little cheeks, and I'm not even an old lady yet!

Just came over from SITS. what a lovely post. it brought a tear to my eye because I lost my sister when we were teens. we always talked about our kids playing together and living close to each other. I think God gave us those conversations and our closeness because we didnt have much time together (all my friends were fighting with their sisters when they were teens). Thanks for stirring the memories this am! Have a great day!

Oh my. Your pictures took me back 20-something years. Seems not all that long ago that I had you and your sister doing the same thing. Please may I join you sometime when you take them playing? I know you said I could go....just wanted to reinforce that I would like to.
