“When We Were Little” Wednesday

WWWLWednesday_Page_0

When I was little, I absolutely loved this time of year. Which time of year is that, you ask? Get this: I loved the time of year during which commercials and calendars everywhere heralded the end of summer and the beginning of the school year. For me, summer was always too long. I got bored before it was over, and besides that, I loved school. Loved it. (Plus, my sister and I had been playing school all summer, so we might as well actually be in school!)

Mom would take my sister and me to registration, where we would find out who our teachers would be and where our classrooms were. We’d find out which of our friends would be in our classes, and which bus we would be riding that year. One of the very best parts came after we left registration: school supply shopping.

We would march into Office Max or Wal-Mart or wherever we were going with our supply lists in hand, eager to pick out everything we would need. We would get equally excited over the “fun” supplies (backpacks and markers) as we would over the “boring” supplies (#2 pencils and rulers). We loved it all. Once we got everything home, I would sit and diligently pack and re-pack my backpack, getting everything just. right. before the first day of school. I loved the smell of the new notebooks and pens and brand new packs of paper. I loved the look of a fresh, clean binder full of blank paper. I loved how new pencils lined up perfectly in the pencil compartment of my backpack, and I loved selecting just the perfect outfit for the first day of school.

I just loved it all. Call me what you will, but I loved the beginning of school.

Remember K-Mart before Wal-mart came around? My mom was big on lay- away *L* I hated school. Hated it. But a tiny, itty bitty part of me was secretly happy to get back.
